Indian Head Massage
An Indian head massage is a massage technique that focuses on the head, scalp, face, neck, shoulders, and upper back. It has its roots in the Indian practice of Ayurvedic wellness, where head massage has been used for centuries as part of daily self-care and relaxation.
What happens during the massage?
The therapist will usually:
-
Massage and knead the shoulders and upper back to release muscle tension.
-
Work on the neck to ease stiffness.
-
Massage the scalp using a variety of circular and rhythmic movements.
-
Sometimes include the forehead, temples, jaw, and face.
The pressure can usually be adjusted from very gentle to quite firm depending on your preference.

What is it good for!
Many people choose an Indian head massage because it can help with:
-
Reducing stress and anxiety. The slow, repetitive movements often help your nervous system shift into a more relaxed state.
-
Relieving tension headaches. If your headaches are related to tight neck or scalp muscles, it may help reduce them.
-
Easing neck and shoulder stiffness. This is especially useful if you spend long hours at a desk or looking at screens.
-
Improving sleep. Many people find they sleep more deeply after a treatment.
-
Creating a sense of mental calm. People often describe feeling as though their "mind has slowed down."
There are also claims that it improves hair growth or dramatically boosts circulation to the brain, but there isn't strong scientific evidence to support those specific benefits.
How will I feel!
Most people feel one or more of the following:
-
Deeply relaxed or even sleepy.
-
Mentally clearer or quieter, as though stress has lifted.
-
A pleasant tingling or warmth across the scalp and shoulders.
-
Ready for a nap or an early night.
-
Lighter in the neck and shoulders with improved range of movement.

Some people also notice:
-
Slightly oily or messy hair (if oils were used).
-
Mild tenderness if they had very tight muscles and received a firm massage.
-
Feeling thirsty afterwards, which is common after many massage treatments.
The relaxed feeling often lasts for several hours, and some people continue to feel calmer into the following day.
